Haneda Airport, Japan's largest civil airport at the time, opened in 1931 on a tiny piece of bay-front property near the south end of today's airport complex. It served as the primary operational base for Japan Air Transport, the country's flag carrier at the time. During the US occupation of Japan in 1945, it functioned as a US airbase and was renamed Haneda Army Air Base. During this period, the runways of Haneda Airport were expanded to 1.65km and 2.1km, respectively. When the Japanese took over the base in 1952, it was renamed Tokyo International Airport. Haneda handled its first international passenger flight in 1947 and its first domestic flights in 1951.
