Hypersonic Kinetic Energy

Rods from God was the name given to this weapon by the media in 2004. And nothing was heard for a long time regarding the hypersonic kinetic energy weapons system. However, it is still in development and has the potential to be as devastating as nuclear weapons. The Outer Space Treaty was signed by 107 countries in 1967. This pact prohibited the use of weapons of mass devastation from space. However, at the time, weapons of mass destruction were classified as nuclear, biological, and chemical. And a hypersonic kinetic energy weapon is neither of these. In reality, these weapons are little more than tungsten rods.

Twenty feet long and one foot wide. If these were launched from, by the time they impacted the ground, they would have the power of an intercontinental ballistic missile, wiping out anything below. Project Thor was motivated by the usage of Lazy Dog bombs during the Vietnam War. These were two-inch-long pieces of steel that were dropped from planes. They would hit the earth at around 500 miles per hour as they gained velocity. There was no need for explosives, and they could penetrate concrete nearly a foot deep.

Project Thor, also known as Rods from God, entails dropping tungsten rods the size of telephone poles from space satellites. They can travel at ten times the speed of sound before collapsing. And when they reached the ground, they'd sink several hundred feet through it. That means that even if a target is hidden in a bunker, they are not secure. When the rods collide, enough force is released to rival a ground-penetrating nuclear weapon. Furthermore, there is no fallout from the explosion.
