Independence Day
Since November 1, 1981, when Antigua and Barbuda gained independence from Great Britain, the islands have been honored with boisterous festivities highlighted by chiming church bells and blaring sirens. In Antigua and Barbuda, Independence Day is a national holiday. The Prime Minister addresses the country with a speech. After that, there is a magnificent ceremonial parade.
During the two weeks leading up to the holiday, all government buildings and schools are brightly colored in yellow and red, and the streets are packed with parades, music, food fairs, and galas. During this holiday, the islands come alive with patriotism and pride. If travelers can visit the island around this time of year, the Independence Day (and week) celebrations are a must-see event.
