International Law: Our Common Future

Belk Distinguished Professor Mark Gibney teaches at the University of North Carolina-Asheville. Gibney has been in charge of the Political Terror Scale (PTS) since 1984, which assesses the severity of bodily integrity violations in more than 185 nations.

In contrast to more traditional textbooks, International Law: Our Common Future takes a lively approach to the study of international law and actively engages students. Focusing on recent events like international terrorism, extraordinary rendition, the legitimacy of drone strikes, environmental destruction, and human rights is one approach to accomplish this. Another is to present pupils with actual court decisions rather than just brief descriptions of them. Following these instances, which come from a variety of international, regional, and national tribunals, are a number of thought-provoking and difficult questions and prompts that will unavoidably spark class discussion and debate.

The significance of visual media for student learning is acknowledged throughout the book. Each chapter includes sections headed "International Law at the Movies" that showcase feature films and documentaries that explore the issue at hand in addition to photos of people and events that played significant roles in the formation of international law.

Students will rapidly understand that international law is closely related to many facets of their daily life rather than being a distant and abstract concept. Among the best books on international law, the book demonstrates some notable changes in international law, most notably the diminishing significance of the state's role. Finally, the book is written in a conversational, engaging way that is understandable to students across a variety of academic areas.
