Iona Preparatory School
Iona Preparatory School, also known as Iona Prep, is an independent, Catholic, all-male, college-preparatory school in New Rochelle, New York. It was established in 1916 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers and named after the Scottish island of Iona, where St. Columba founded a monastic community in the 6th century. The school's motto, "Be Strong" or "Estote Firmi" in Latin, reflects its mission to develop young men into moral and ethical leaders dedicated to Christian service and striving for spiritual, intellectual, and physical excellence.
Iona Prep consists of two campuses: the Upper School for grades 9 to 12 and the Lower School for kindergarten to grade 8. The Upper School has 901 students and a student-teacher ratio of 3 to 1, while the Lower School has 182 students and a student-teacher ratio of 5 to 1. Both schools provide a challenging academic curriculum that prepares students for college and beyond.
Iona Preparatory School offers 27 Advanced Placement courses, 15 honors courses, and a variety of electives like forensics, music, theater, and fine arts. The Lower School offers a comprehensive program that includes language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, religion, Spanish, art, music, physical education, and technology.
In addition to academics, Iona Prep has a diverse range of extracurricular activities and athletics. The school offers over 50 clubs and organizations tailored to students' interests and talents, including the Gael Force robotics team, Model United Nations, National Honor Society, Student Council, and ACTION Leadership Team.
Moreover, the school also boasts a strong athletic program that competes in the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) and the New York State Federation. With 18 varsity sports, such as baseball, basketball, football, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, and track and field, Iona Prep has achieved numerous championships and produced notable athletes like Matt Berninger, the lead singer of the indie rock band The National, and Mariano Rivera, the former pitcher for the New York Yankees.
