Jay-Z and Beyoncé: $88 Million

Jay-Z and Beyoncé, who spent $88 million for a hillside house in Bel-Air, believe that one of the world's greatest power couples deserves one of the world's best residences. It is the sixth most expensive property ever purchased in Los Angeles. Four pools, a 15-car garage, a helipad, a complete spa, and wellness center, and 30,000 square feet of living space encased in six separate glass-walled buildings are among the property's most appealing features. The famed architect Paul McClean points to a white cluster in the mountains east of the Getty Museum.

"It's certainly visible from space," McClean says of the spec house he built. At 8,000 square feet, the new Blue Jay Way home isn't the largest of McClean's projects, which may have six-digit square footage and nine-digit price tags. The design is a riff on the neighborhood's renowned midcentury contemporary, pumped up with steroids and silicone to a level that would even Rudolph Schindler, a pioneer of modernist Hollywood architecture, blush.
