Jeff Bezos

If you're the world's wealthiest person, spending on a massive property in a distant Hawaiian retreat would hardly scratch the surface of your money. And that's exactly what Jeff Bezos and his girlfriend, Lauren Sánchez, did. The couple is said to have spent $78 million on a tropical mansion at La Perouse Bay on the island of Maui. The remote property covers four hectares (14 acres). While there isn't much information on the property, the huge main home is estimated to be over 4,500 square feet and has an outdoor kitchen with ocean views. It is surrounded by a 1,700 square foot guest house, various smaller structures, and a 700 square foot swimming pool that is absolutely round. The mansion is also bordered by palm palms and lovely grounds.

The coastal house is located on Maui's sparsely populated southwestern edge, far from Kahului, the island's major city. The residence is located around 19 kilometers (12 miles) south of Kihei, the nearest major city, and is surrounded by state parkland and rocky lava fields. According to media sources, the property was once owned by Colorado-based energy billionaire Doug Schatz, who bought it for US$4.2 million in 1996 with his business partners, according to Dirt.com. In 1999, Schatz and his wife purchased the entire estate and spent thousands of dollars renovating it to their satisfaction.
