Kisiizi Falls
Located in Rukungiri, between Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Kisiizi Falls is a great stop. Kisiizi Falls is located on the Kyabamba River a few meters from Kisiizi Hospital in the Rukungiri district bordering Kabale in western Uganda. The waterfalls about 30 meters high on the Rushoma River pour water into Lake Edward. This waterfall originates from the Kyabamba River, from a 27-meter-high cliff descending into a deep gorge. The waterfall is so strong that visitors can feel the mist from 100 meters away. The main activities here such as swinging in the forest canopy, crossing the new suspension bridge, bird watching, and nature walks in the surrounding wooded area are just some of what is on offer at Kisiizi Falls.
Historically, Kisiizi Falls was a tragic place where unmarried pregnant Bakiga girls were punished. This practice was discontinued and the place of despair became a place of hope and healing when the Uganda Church established the Kisiizi Hospital in 1958. The Kisiizi valley was also used by the British as the site for a flax processing factory in 1944, which was built to produce linen cords even though used during the Second World War. Geographically, the waterfall is located in a forested area and canyon known for its birdlife including endemic species such as the Ross Turaco, the double-toothed Barbet, and the Eater Cinnamon Bee. As a tourist area, it is famous for its scenic environment and trekking activities. The area also operates from a social development perspective. The Church of Uganda has established a hospital, school, and nursing organization to provide health care and educational opportunities to the surrounding community. The hospital management has established a small power plant and power station serving the Kisiizi community. With unique developments, Kisiizi Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Uganda.
