Lac du Bourget
The Lac du Bourget, an Alpine lake prized for its idyllic setting in the French Alps as well as its cultural attractions, is surrounded by densely forested hillsides. Aix-les-Bains, an internationally recognized spa town that has been a destination for therapeutic holidays since the Belle Epoque, is on the shores of the lake.
The Lac du Bourget now offers spa services as well as leisure activities to its tourists. There are roughly a dozen beaches along its shores (most of which are accessible by bus), including well-equipped beaches in Le Bourget du Lac and Châtillon, which are perfect for swimming, boating, and other water activities. The Abbaye d'Hautecombe, a 12th-century Cistercian monastery erected on the lake's shore, is the most popular attraction. This magnificent abbey, which is a Historic Monument, includes a lavish Neo-Gothic Troubadour-style cathedral with great pieces of art. The Lac du Bourget is France's largest natural lake, and its environment has been unspoiled by development. Birds such as ducks, herons, and cormorants can be found in this protected area. Outdoor enthusiasts can plan a vacation here. The lake is perfect for water sports and recreational boating.
