Make a rain gauge

One of the best activities to do with kids to get them outside is building a weather station. By erecting a DIY weather station in the backyard, you can get the kids interested in science at home. A wind vane will tell you which way the wind is blowing, a barometer will teach the youngsters about air pressure, and a rain gauge will measure how much rain falls (ideal for the weather we have here!). They can record all their discoveries in a weather journal.

Making a rain gauge is very simple and easy to do. With just a few simple steps, you and your child have a homemade rain forecaster at home.

All you need is an empty, two-liter plastic bottle that has been cut in half. The bottle's top portion should then be placed inside the bottom portion and secured with adhesive tape. Next, reate a centimeter scale on a piece of tape using a ruler, then attach it to the bottle. Then, dig a hole to bury the gauge in so that just about 5 cm of it protrudes above ground in an open area of the garden that is free from any cover. And finally, all you have to do is check your rain gauge each day at the same time, calculate how much rain it has accumulated, and empty the bottle.
