Make a wind vane

A wind vane makes up the second component of your weather station. It can tell you which way the wind is blowing, and a barometer can teach children about air pressure. They can record all their observations in a weather diary. This is one of the things to do with the kids at home.

Now let's go to the step-by-step implementation of a wind vane. On a piece of card, design an arrow measuring 25 cm in length, cut it out, and then draw another arrow around it. Between the two arrows, sandwich a pen top and adhere with adhesive. Gather four matchsticks and a cork, then insert the matchsticks at right angles to one another into the long side of the cork. Using Blu-tack, affix four pieces of card with the letters N, S, E, and W to the ends of the matchsticks. Sand should be added to a bottle before inserting a knitting needle into the cork and then into the sand. Using a compass to point the N label North, position the wind vane in an open space, balance the arrow atop the needle, and observe. You can see where the wind is blowing via the arrow.
