Mezquita of Cordoba
Mosque – Cathedral of Córdoba, officially known as the Church of Our Lady of Mongolia, is the church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Córdoba dedicated to the Feast of Mary and located in the region of Andalusia, Spain. Due to its status as a former mosque, it is also known as Mezquita and is the Grand Mosque of Córdoba.
As the name suggests, the great Mezquita of Cordoba was a mosque for a large part of its history. In 784, the Muslim rulers of Cordoba built an imposing mosque on top of a small Visigoth church, erecting numerous columns and domes. Covering the interior are magnificent mosaics and ceramic tiles.
After the Reconquista, the mosque was converted into a Catholic church, and its minaret was turned into a bell tower. In addition, a Renaissance church nave is placed in the center of the complex. A sanctuary and home of both faiths for centuries, Mezquita of Cordoba is considered by many to be one of the most fascinating examples of Moorish architecture around.
