The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, commonly known as the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur and often simply Sacré-Cœur, is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica in Paris, France, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The Basilica of Sacré-Cœur is located atop the Montmartre butte, the highest point in the city. It is a famous landmark and the second most visited memorial in Paris. The Basilica of Sacré-Cœur has maintained permanent Eucharistic adoration since 1885. The basilica was designed by Paul Abadie.
It is considered a political and cultural monument, representing the national penance for France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and for the actions of the Paris Commune in 1871. Cœur was built in a neighborhood that was an important witness to the events of the Paris Commune of 1871
