Miyako Island, Miyako-jima (Miyako Islands)

Miyako Island is the main island of Miyakojima, located in the Pacific Ocean about 300 km southwest of the main island of Okinawa. It is located about 5-22 km north of Ikema Island. Miyako Islands also houses "Yaeganase", which is Japan's largest reef group. The reef is 17 km long and 6.5 km wide. As one of the most beautiful islands in Okinawa, it has also become a popular destination for swimming and scuba diving, and one of the top most beautiful dive sites in Japan. In addition to enjoying corals and tropical fish, divers are more likely to encounter devil fish between December and March, oh when divers can also come across both humpback whales and dolphins.


"Miyakojima" was formed from an increasing change in the depth that which the reef resides. Every year, the reef is submerged in seawater.
