Motor Yacht A

Philippe Starck designed Motor Yacht A (MY A), which was engineered by naval architect Martin Francis. It was built at the HDW deepwater facility in Kiel by the Blohm + Voss shipyard. It was ordered in November 2004 and delivered in 2008 for an estimated $300 million. It is one of the world's largest motor yachts, measuring 119 meters (390 feet) and weighing about 6,000 tons. Andrey Melnichenko, a Russian entrepreneur and manufacturer, owns it.

When Motor Yacht A was first commissioned, little was known about it, as it is with many superyachts. In December 2004, the vessel's builder, Blohm + Voss, published a press release identifying the vessel as Project Sigma, which was its most frequent name during construction. It measured 118 meters in length. While personal credit was given to conceptual designer Philippe Starck and project manager Neil Wade, naval architect Martin Francis was the project's principal technical and naval designer and Starck's collaborator. The final shape, with its reverse bow and tumblehome design, was said to have taken only three and a half hours to come up with, drawing comparisons to the Zumwalt class of stealth destroyers developed for the US Navy.
