Portman and her family lived in Washington, D.C. for a time before moving to Connecticut in 1988 and then to Long Island in 1990. Portman attended Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, Maryland, while living in Washington. She was a regular at the American Theater Dance Workshop and the Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, where she trained in ballet and modern dance.
Natalie Portman won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2010 for her performance as a damaged ballerina in the psychological thriller film Black Swan. She trained in ballet for five to eight hours a day for six months to prepare for her role in this film. Portman has two daughters with her husband, French ballet dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied.
