Ness and Paula (EarthBound/Mother)
EarthBound went through a five-year development phase. Returning from Mother (1989) were writer/director Shigesato Itoi and chief programmer Satoru Iwata, as well as composers Keiichi Suzuki and Hirokazu Tanaka, who included a variety of styles in the music, including salsa, reggae, and dub. Most of the other crew members had not worked on the original Mother, and the game was threatened with cancellation several times until Iwata joined the project. The game was supposed to be released in January 1993, but it wasn't finished until about May 1994. Paula from the settlement of Twoson is the first to join the group of protagonist Ness in Nintendo's surprise success RPG EarthBound.
Ness saves her early in the game, and she is armed with a frying pan and tremendous PSI powers. These powers are critical in overcoming the main antagonist, the Lovecraftian creature known as Giygas. Unfortunately, the couple never became an official couple in the novel, although many individuals note how their behaviors imply they are more than just friends. It was clear, whether it was Jeff or Ness's mother, that Ness and Paula had a particular affinity. The strongest indication came when an NPC said that by the conclusion of the game, Ness had lipstick on his face.
