The original 1989 Mother was not officially published to Western audiences until it was released as EarthBound Beginnings on the Wii U in 2015. The game, however, is quite similar to EarthBound, right down to the relationship between the main character and the female party member. Ninten, the protagonist, encounters Ana, a female who also fights with a frying pan and has great PSI powers.
Ninten and Ana are more developed characters than Ness and Paula. Near the end of the game, their pal Teddy gives them some alone time, and the two youngsters enjoy a special dance. Ana asks Ninten whether he loves her, and if the player responds yes, Ana is overjoyed and tells Ninten how she fell in love with him at first sight.
