Night of the Living Dead
Night of the Living Dead is a 1968 American independent horror film written, directed, photographed and edited by George A. Romero, co-written by John Russo, and starring Duane Jones and Judith O'Dea. The story follows seven people who are trapped in a rural farmhouse in western Pennsylvania, which is under assault by an enlarging group of cannibalistic, undead ghouls.
Barbra and her brother, Johnny, are accosted by a weird, lumbering creature while visiting a graveyard. Barbra winds up to a farmhouse where others are already sheltering after Johnny is slain. One of their number, the brave Ben, uses his ingenuity to keep the gang safe – for a time. As the home is besieged by zombie ghouls seeking brains, tensions quickly flare. The claustrophobic and persistent sense of dread in this low-budget horror film is one of the reasons it has persisted as a cult classic. It also has a fascinating undertone concerning the Vietnam War and race relations in the United States.
