In the year 2075 in "Planetes," space travel has evolved from an aspirational dream into an integral part of human life. Groundbreaking progress in scientific and technological fields has enabled the colonization of the moon, the commercialization of space, and the establishment of formidable space corporations.

Ai Tanabe, an optimistic individual with a strong fascination for the cosmos, secures a position at Technora Corporation within their Debris Section, a specialized department focused on the critical task of clearing hazardous space debris from the orbital region between Earth and the Moon. However, Ai swiftly becomes aware of the underappreciated nature of her role. The Debris Section, regarded as the laughingstock of Technora, operates with insufficient resources and a shortage of staff. Their primary spacecraft, humorously named the "Toy Box," has seen better days.

Nevertheless, Ai's determination remains unshaken as she familiarizes herself with the eclectic personalities comprising the Debris Section's workforce in "Planetes." This includes the well-intentioned yet clumsy chief clerk Philippe Myers, the reticent temp worker Edelgard Rivera, and the hot-tempered, aspiring spaceship owner Hachirouta Hoshino.
