Promote heart health
Scallops are a wise substitute for fatty red meat since they are a very good source of protein and contain little saturated fat when served simply. Your daily intake of PUFAs (polyunsaturated fats), which have been linked by studies to a lower risk of cardiovascular mortality, can be increased with the aid of scallops.
They also include some omega-3 fatty acids, more than shrimp but less than other species of finfish, which are good for the heart (i.e., bony fish like salmon). Scallops do contain some cholesterol (48mg in one serving), however, evidence indicates that saturated fat, not dietary cholesterol, is the main factor in heart disease risk.
