Prut
The Prut is a river in Eastern Europe that runs for 953 kilometers. It is a Danube tributary on the left bank. It runs through Romania, forming part of the country's border with Moldova and Ukraine.
The Prut comes from the eastern slope of Mount Hoverla in Ukraine's Carpathian Mountains. The river runs to the north at first. It curves to the northeast near Yaremche then to the south-east near Kolomyia. When it reaches the Moldova-Romania border, it bends even more to the south-east, and finally to the south. Near Giurgiulești, east of Galați and west of Reni, it eventually meets the Danube.
The basin's lowest reaches are heavily marshy. At its mouth, the average discharge is 110 m3/s. In the city of Leova, the average discharge is 69.2 m3/s. The river's slope varies from 100 meters per kilometer (near the source) to 0.05 meters per kilometer (near the mouth). It has a mountainous character in the higher stages, with a steep right bank and a ridge-like cross-sectional profile of the channel. The Probiy waterfall is located near Yaremche.
