There are over three thousand rivers and streams in Moldova, although only eight of them are longer than 100 kilometers (60 miles). The Dniester (also known as ... read more...

  1. The Dniester River (1,362 km) flows through Ukraine, Moldova (from which it almost completely separates the breakaway entity of Transnistria), and finally into the Black Sea on Ukrainian soil. The name Dniester comes from the Sarmatian word “dniester”, which means "near river." The Dnieper, which is likewise Sarmatian in origin, has the reverse meaning, "the river on the other side”. The Dniester is named after the Ancient Greek word "rapid."

The Dniester River was the epicenter of one of the world's most advanced civilizations during the Neolithic period. From around 5300 to 2600 BC, the Cucuteni–Trypillian culture flourished in this area, leaving thousands of archeological sites behind. Their towns had up to 15,000 people, making them one of the world's first big farming communities. The little area to the east of the Dniester that had been part of the Moldavian SSR declined to participate in the Republic of Moldova's declaration of independence in 1991, and declared itself the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, or Transnistria, with its capital at Tiraspol on the river.

    Prut

The Prut is a river in Eastern Europe that runs for 953 kilometers. It is a Danube tributary on the left bank. It runs through Romania, forming part of the country's border with Moldova and Ukraine.

The Prut comes from the eastern slope of Mount Hoverla in Ukraine's Carpathian Mountains. The river runs to the north at first. It curves to the northeast near Yaremche then to the south-east near Kolomyia. When it reaches the Moldova-Romania border, it bends even more to the south-east, and finally to the south. Near Giurgiulești, east of Galați and west of Reni, it eventually meets the Danube.

The basin's lowest reaches are heavily marshy. At its mouth, the average discharge is 110 m3/s. In the city of Leova, the average discharge is 69.2 m3/s. The river's slope varies from 100 meters per kilometer (near the source) to 0.05 meters per kilometer (near the mouth). It has a mountainous character in the higher stages, with a steep right bank and a ridge-like cross-sectional profile of the channel. The Probiy waterfall is located near Yaremche.

    Răut

As the greatest tributary of the Dniester River and, at the same time, the largest river that springs and runs wholly on Moldovan territory, the Răut River has a length of 286 kilometers and is entirely contained inside the Republic of Moldova's territory. The river flows into the Dniester near the village of Ustia in the Dubasari area, starting from a spring in Rediul Mare village, Donduseni district.

The Răut River watershed encompasses a large portion of the Dniester Plateau and the Central Moldavian Plateau. The level surface of the basin is heavily fragmented by extensive gullies and ravines, many of which have canyon-like shapes.

Except for 3.2 percent of the basin, which is covered by deciduous forests, primarily oak and hornbeam, the basin is mostly used as agricultural land. The swampy regions, which are only found in riverbeds, cover around 0.8 percent of the basin's surface.

  4. It is considered the location of the appearance of the well-pronounced stream as a source of the Bîc River. The river is 155 kilometers long, with a basin area of 2040 square kilometers.

The water quality of the Bîc River was determined by biological monitoring in the autumn of 2012, and it was discovered that the water is moderately polluted upstream of the municipality of Chisinau, but becomes highly polluted within the municipality's region, so that the river's life gradually fades starting with Varnița street (the capital's industrial sector), due to the aggressive pollution to which the river is subjected.

This dead water is utilized for irrigation of agricultural areas in the Anenii Noi district, which are sold on Chisinau markets, but it also has an impact on the quality of the groundwater in this area. Unfortunately, no studies have been conducted in the Republic of Moldova that consider the influence of a polluted river on man's life and way of living.

    Botna

Botna is a Moldovan river that is a right tributary of the Dniester. Botna is Moldova's fifth longest river, measuring 152 kilometers in length. The Botna River flows through some towns in the Republic of Moldova's central region. Botna springs in a beech-hornbeam woodland on the south-eastern slope of a sloping slope. It passes through Ulmu, Văsieni, Ruseştii Noi, and other settlements. The river has an average slope of 1.5 degrees.

The river's route is southeast from the source to the village of Salcuta, then northeast. There is a right asymmetry in the river valley compared to Bardar. The meadow's breadth ranges from 0.5 to 1.0 km in the upper course to 2.0 to 2.5 km in the bottom course. The river used to meander across the valley of Costeşti village. The bed was then directed and made deeper.

    Ialpug

The Ialpug is a river that runs through Moldova and Ukraine's Odessa Oblast. It springs near the village of Tomai in the Leova District, runs south in parallel with the Prut, then through the Bolhrad Raion in Ukraine, and enters Lake Yalpuh near Bolhrad.

The scholar voivode Dimitrie Cantemir mentions this river in his paper Descriptio Moldaviae (Description of Moldavia), written in Latin between 1714 and 1716: "Moldavia and Bessarabia's Cahulul, Salcia, and Ialpuhul all contribute to the Danube's expansion. Only the Ialpug flows without consistency among the latter; the others are more stable than flowing."

The main tributaries are on the left the river Lunga, and on the right Chirsova Mare, Aluguel, and Salvia Mare.

  7. The Cubolta River is a left tributary of the Răut that originates in the town of Lipnic and runs into the Răut on the left bank, near the village of Putinești, at an elevation of 85 meters. The river's length is 101.3 kilometers, while the basin's surface area is -943 kilometers.

The basin's surface ranges from 287.6 meters in the high part to 150 meters in the bottom part. Cretaceous and Tertiary layers (limestone, marl, sands, clays) provide the foundation, which is covered by a Quaternary loess modal overlay. On the surface, chernozems have formed, and loessial clays occur. The basin's area is dominated by agricultural land, with mature deciduous forests (oak, ash, maple, and acacia) occupying only 1.2 percent of the basin's surface.

The slopes are steep, ranging in height from 40 to 120 meters, concave and straight, consisting of sandy clays, furrowed by valleys and ravines, with several quarries for limestone extraction, primarily exploited under agricultural land, grassy. The meadow is bilateral, smooth, and dry, with meadow vegetation and marshy regions in some places. It is made primarily of sandy clays and has meadow vegetation.

    Ikelis

The Ikelis River is part of 8 major rivers in Moldova, the length of which exceeds 100 km, being the last on the list. It occurred to us that showing you some of the gorgeous locations in the villages surrounding Ikelis would be beneficial. They are Boşcana, Coşerniţa, and Oniţcani, which is a little further down the road. Essentially, this is the only option, and it is a very interesting one.

The vista of the springs dispersed around the area, some of which are natural monuments, left a lasting impression. The settlement of Coşerniţa, as well as the house-museum built by a local Alexandru ăranu and the old, typical Moldovan dwellings in the village, are worth visiting.

At first sight, this voyage down the Ikelis River convinced us that traveling through Moldova is impossible to be bored, and new surprises await you at every turn. Your lords will inform us whether this is true or not. Only if you are traveling can you check this.
