Scarlet Heart
A well-known historical romantic drama series in China with the working title "Scarlet Heart" is also known as "Bu Bu Jing Xin" in Chinese. The drama, which premiered in China in 2011, is based on the same-named Tong Hua novel.
The narrative centers on Zhang Xiao, a young woman from the 21st century who time travels to the Qing period and ends up imprisoned in the body of Maertai Ruoxi, a 16-year-old. She is drawn into the power struggles and intrigues of the princes of the ruling family, the sons of the Kangxi Emperor, who are all competing for the throne.
Nicky Wu plays the Fourth Prince, better known as the Emperor Yongzheng, in the drama, and Liu Shi Shi plays Zhang Xiao/Maertai Ruoxi. In addition to being well-liked domestically and abroad, particularly in Southeast Asia, the series has a sizable fan base in China.
A Korean version of the drama with the working title "Scarlet Heart: Ryeo" was produced in 2016 and starred IU and Lee Joon-gi. The Korean adaptation, which has a completely new cast and is set during the Goryeo era, has a similar plot.
