Its creation was a collaborative endeavor with the University of Pennsylvania, and it continues to have an impact on Shiraz today. The institution offers 80 Bachelor's, 180 Master's, and 120 Doctoral degree programs.

Shiraz University seeks to be innovative, and has pioneered e-learning, international cooperation, and the development of new PhD programs in Iran.

The institution owns and maintains the luxurious Eram Botanical Garden, a superb example of a Persian decorative garden dating back to 1372. The park and its intricate structures are among Shiraz's most popular tourist attractions. Shiraz is home to a diverse collection of heritage sites, including ancient tombs, mosques, and temples. The city is also known for having one of Iran's largest Jewish populations, with many synagogues and two Christian churches.
