Skaftafell Blue Ice Cave

You will explore one of these wonders on a glacial estuary of the Vatnajökull glacier. You will be amazed at the magical beauty of the special ice cave near the glacial lagoon of Svínafellsjökull in Skaftafell, Iceland. Ice caves like these are a type of structure that often occurs in areas where glaciers exist.

This ice cave is nothing special from the outside, but when you step inside, you can see all its magical beauty. Ice caves are formed by thousands of years old ice sheets on the volcanic island of Oaefajokull, Iceland's highest volcano. The entrance to the cave is about 7m wide and higher than the cave, so the light can almost shine into the cave all day. The reflection of sunlight through the flats makes the scene extremely magical. However, not everyone has the opportunity to admire this beautiful ice cave. Vatnajökull Ice Caves are temporary structures that appear at the edge of glaciers and can collapse anytime. Exploration is only done in winter when low temperatures make the ice harder and safer. Winter is also the most beautiful time of the ice cave when the blue of the ice is best seen after a long period of autumn flows washing away the surface layer of the glacier. When visiting the cave, visitors can also hear the sound of ice cracking, creating the feeling that the cave is about to collapse. But that was just the shifting sound of the glacier.
