Sorry I'm Late, I Didn't Want to Come
Jessica Pan is a journalist whose work has appeared in publications such as the Guardian's Weekend magazine, The Cut, Refinery29, and Vice. She graduated from Brown University with a degree in psychology and is the coauthor of Graduates in Wonderland, an epistolary memoir about living in Beijing and Paris. She was a TV reporter and magazine editor in Beijing before moving to London.
What would happen if a shy introvert spent a year acting like a gregarious extrovert? If she willingly and knowingly places herself in risky social situations that she would typically avoid at all costs? Jessica Pan, a writer, seeks to find out. Jessica sets up a series of personal challenges (talk to strangers, perform stand-up comedy, host a dinner party, travel alone, make friends on the road, and much, much worse) with the help of various extrovert mentors to see if living as an extrovert can teach her lessons that might improve the quality of her life. Sorry I'm Late, I Didn't Want to Come explores what happens when an introvert overcomes her natural tendencies, takes the plunge, and attempts (and sometimes fails) to be a little bit braver, chronicling the author's amusing and terrible year of escapades.
Sorry I'm Late, I Didn't Want to Come is a riotous, hysterical delight. Jessica Pan's sense of humour as she blunders (and sometimes prevails) in an extrovert-dominated society will undoubtedly appeal to introverts everywhere. The only disadvantage is that her book about getting out and meeting new people will force you to stay at home until you finish it.
