Squid Game
Squid Game is a South Korean survival drama television series created by Hwang Dong-hyuk for Netflix. The series revolves around a contest in which 456 players, all of whom are in dire financial need, risk their lives to play a series of lethal children's games in order to win a 45.6 billion prize. The series title is based on a Korean children's game of the same name. Squid Game was released to critical acclaim and international attention on September 17, 2021. It is Netflix's most-watched series, having become the most-viewed program in 94 countries, attracting more than 142 million member households, and amassing 1.65 billion viewing hours in its first four weeks of release, surpassing Bridgerton for the title of the most-watched show. Several awards have also been bestowed upon the series, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor - Series, Miniseries, or Television Film and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance.
In this film, Kim Young-ok plays Oh Mal-soon, Gi-hun's mother. Oh Mal-soon is the archetypal nagging but deep-down loving mother. She is concerned for her son's safety because Gi-hun gets himself into a lot of trouble, and she questions him about whether he stole or gambled the money he brings back home. Her son's life path has deeply disappointed her, and their debts have left them penniless. In fact, she is still working to earn money and pay her rent, and she earns more than Gi-hun does, however, he frequently asks for loans from her and has previously taken money from her account.
