The Americanization Of Emily
The Americanization of Emily is a 1964 British-American black-and-white romantic dark comedy-drama war film directed by Arthur Hiller and starring James Garner, Julie Andrews, Melvyn Douglas, and James Coburn. It was written by Paddy Chayefsky, produced by Martin Ransohoff, and starred James Garner, Julie Andrews, Melvyn Douglas, and James Coburn. Joyce Grenfell, Keenan Wynn, and William Windom also star in the picture. Chayefsky's script was partially based on William Bradford Huie's 1959 novel of the same name, which he wrote after serving as a SeaBee officer during the Normandy Invasion.
Julie Andrews took up the major part of Emily Barham in a black-and-white production the same year as Mary Poppins was released. She's a widow whose husband was killed in the war, along with her brother and father, making her a very emotional figure. She meets a navy officer who is hiding in London because he is afraid, and despite the difficult circumstances, the two falls in love. Julie Andrews impresses in one of her most somber parts in this film.
