The Castles of Spain
Many fortified castles were constructed by both sides to defend their respective territories during the Reconquest, when the Christians were battling the Moors town by town. The border would move repeatedly, necessitating the construction of new castles. On the highest point of a town, one frequently encounters a castle while traveling through Spain. In Spain, the Middle Ages saw the construction of 10,000 to 20,000 castles. However, only approximately 2,500 remain at the current moment as many have gotten worse over time.
In addition, politics between the monarchs and the nobility led the kings to order the destruction of the castles of nobles who weren't in their favor. The Spanish word for castle, Castilla, was used to build a large number of castles. The Alcazar in Segovia, which Walt Disney used as the inspiration for the Cinderella castles constructed in Disneylands all over the world, is the most well-known castle in Spain. Manzanares el Real, Belmonte, Coca, Medina del Campo, San Esteban de Gormaz, Loarre, and Cardona are a few other well-known castles in Spain. All of these castles give Spain a feeling of romance and enchantment. Spain has the most castles of any nation.
