The Irish Wolfhound

One of the biggest dog breeds is the Irish Wolfhound which is a legendary sighthound dog breed from Ireland that has influenced literature, poetry, and mythology due to its presence and imposing size. Like all sighthounds, it was trained to hunt game quickly. It was also renowned as a guard dog, with a focus on wolf protection and wolf hunting.

Large size is a defining characteristic of the Irish Wolfhound. The minimum heights and weights for dogs and bitches, respectively, are 79 cm /54.5 kg and 71 cm /40.5 kg, as stated in the FCI standard. Expected heights at the withers vary from 81 to 86 centimeters. Compared to the Great Dane, it is bigger constructed than the Scottish Deerhound.

Irish Wolfhounds have a wide spectrum of characteristics and are frequently praised for their individuality and quirky personalities. However, despite their size and tendency to be heedless, Irish Wolfhounds are rarely known to be loud or destructive inside the home. This is due to the breed's characteristic introversion, intelligence, and reserve. The Irish Wolfhound is a calm creature by nature. When left alone for an extended period of time, wolfhounds can develop strong bonds with their family and become highly destructive or depressed.
