De la Vega is imprisoned after his adversary, Montero, discovers his actual identity, and his baby daughter is seized after his wife is slain during their struggle. The two undergo intensive sword combat training and develop a scheme to gain Montero's trust in order to thwart his ambitions to steal California for the noblemen. It is learned along the way that Montero raised De la Vega's daughter, Elena, as his own. De la Vega wants to get to know her and tell her the truth, while Murietta falls in love with her.
