The Namesake
The debut book of famous Indo-American diasporic author Jhumpa Lahiri, 'The Namesake,' was first published in The New Yorker. It was later expanded into a full-length novel. The novel tells the story of an immigrant Bengali couple and the events that followed.
This book is about a young boy who was unhappy with his given name, 'Gogol.' His family's bond began to fray over time. Gogol starts smoking and dating a lot of girls.
But Gogol had no idea why he was given this name. His actions and behavior caused him to be lonely. As the story progresses, Gogol recognizes his father's words, accepts his name, and selects the Russian author's novels that his father had given him many years before. The ups and downs in the Ganguli family, as well as Gogol's descent into darkness, make this one of the best books to read in your twenties.
