The Room
The Room has been universally acknowledged as one of the best pure puzzlers to come up in years since its debut in 2012. It's strong on tightly integrated puzzle design and mechanics in a single place, but it's also low on plot, with only a smidgeon of a story revealed via notes as you go. When The Room Two was released in 2013, the puzzles were stronger than ever, and a few new adventure aspects snuck in, including an extended environment and the continuation of the mystery suggested in the original game.
The visuals and acoustics on the PC version are significantly superior to those on the mobile version. The room, box, and inventory items are rendered in high-definition 3D, with smooth object manipulation and view transitions. The background music is gentle and pleasant at first, but grows increasingly menacing as you advance. It never becomes repetitive, in part because it does not go on forever, pausing altogether at certain points in the game. When not playing, there is an eerie sound of emptiness that adds to the ambience. When interacting with levers, sliders, and buttons, sound effects are accurate, and a distinct one plays for specific activities such as attaching a lens, collecting an inventory object, or revealing clues.
