Tropicana
Tropicana is an American fruit-based beverage company founded in 1947 by Anthony T. Rossi in Bradenton, Florida. Rossi, an immigrant from Italy, initially bought oranges from supermarkets and turned them into citrus gift boxes. By the late 1940s, Rossi developed a unique process to aseptically package citrus fruits in glass containers for mass distribution.
In 1954, the company introduced flash pasteurization of juice and Tropicana Pure Premium. This process raised the temperature of juice for a short time to preserve its taste, allowing consumers to enjoy the fresh taste of pure not-from-concentrate juice in a chilled package.
Tropicana continued to innovate and grow. In 1957, the Steamship Tropicana began delivering 1.5 million gallons of orange juice from Florida to New York every week. By 1993, Tropicana was buying more than 20% of all of Florida’s annual orange crop.
