University of Benin
The Institution of Benin (UNIBEN) is a public research university located in Benin, Nigeria, in the state of Edo. The University of Benin is one of Benin's most prestigious institutions. In 1970, the University of Benin was founded as a school to combat illiteracy in the country. Before being granted university status by the Commission of National Universities (NUC) in 1971, it was a technology institute.
The University of Benin has faculties and departments that offer graduate, undergraduate, diploma, and certificate courses to its more than 30,000 students. The University of Benin, also known as UNIBEN, is one of the country's best-ranked universities.
The School presently comprises two campuses and fifteen faculties, including the principal library, the John Harris Library. The University of Benin is well-known for collaborating with a wide range of international universities as well as local and international organizations such as USAID, Ford Foundation, UNCF, RMRDC, and others.
UNIBEN is credited with producing the first vice-chancellor. That's what happened from 1985 until 1991 when Grace Alele-Williams was appointed. The total number of students enrolled in the university is currently above 40,000. Both full-time and part-time students are included.
