World's Largest Crocodile in Captivity

The largest crocodile kept in captivity was named Lolong; it passed away on February 10, 2013. He was a saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), one of the biggest crocodiles ever measured from snout to tail at 6.17 m (20 ft 3 in) and 1,075 kg (2,370 lb). Lolong was proven to be the largest crocodile ever captured and kept in captivity in November 2011 after being measured in his enclosure while being sedated by Australian crocodile expert Adam Britton of National Geographic.

On September 3, 2011, Lolong was discovered in a Bunawan creek in the Philippine province of Agusan del Sur. Together, the Palawan people, crocodile hunters, and the local government unit were successful in capturing him. It took about 100 people to pull him onto land after a three-week hunt. During the capture, he displayed aggression on multiple occasions and twice tore the ropes holding him before being finally restrained. He was thought to be at least fifty years of age.
