Yokohama International School
Yokohama International School (YIS) is a welcoming and inclusive community for families of all backgrounds, where students have many opportunities to explore, develop, and challenge themselves.
As a medium-sized IB Continuum School, YIS offers all three main programs of the International Baccalaureate, providing an inquiry-centered, transdisciplinary, and skills-focused learning journey from early years through high school. Their new campus, designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates specifically for their learning programs and teaching philosophy, is located near a shopping complex and other commercial and residential areas in the Honmoku neighborhood in Yokohama.
Learning at their school happens everywhere and in various settings, not just in classrooms; their innovative campus ensures the environment supports this approach. Built for their learning community, every space is designed to be a learning space, and the wood paneling theme and natural light features retain and enhance the warm sense of community for which their school is known.
To honor their host country and its culture, styling cues reflect Japanese modern and traditional architecture and aesthetics, particularly those that reflect harmony between man-made environments and the natural world, and use materials that are both pleasing and ecologically sound.
