  1. Black Hills ranks 1st on the list of the best dive sites in Honduras. This place is a hillock in the middle of the sea, which slopes down to 30-40m/100-130ft. On the far eastern side it drops down beyond 130ft (40m). Covered with a great variety of corals, a dive on the sea mound is a very colorful experience. It is very entertaining to dive at the Black Hills, because there are numerous types of colorful corals covering the mound. Divers can explore all the shallows and ledges in search of small fish and crustaceans.

Scuba diving at the Black Hills dive site offers opportunities to observe various schools of fish. Divers may see such local inhabitants as horse-eyed jacks, Atlantic spadefish, Creole wrasses, moray eels, lionfish, and nurse sharks. In the shallows, try your luck and search for different types of crustaceans. Because of the lack of sandy areas Black Hills is well suited for more experienced divers. For any Advanced Open Water Course dive without the need for sand Black Hills will make a great dive site.

  2. Airport reef ranks 2nd on the list of the best dive sites in Honduras. The attraction consists of a series of twisted cave systems that you can swim through on your approach to the sandy flats where you could see moray eels. Because the finest of the site is approximately 10 meters, even first-time divers with no qualifications can enjoy all of the attractions of this dive location.

The best time to dive the Airport reef is April and May when the weather is warm and dry. The rainy season runs from July to January, with most rain falling from October to early January. This is different to the Honduras mainland. You might see whale sharks at any time of the year but mid February to April are the peak months. Sea temperatures are warm throughout the year, at coldest it is 26 Celsius at the surface. Flamingo tongues, gorgonians, black coral and orange elephant ear sponges line the sides of the wall, while schools of grouper, Blue Chromis, and Creole Wrasse dart around the sides.

  3. The Black Coral that lines the southern facing wall gives this dive an almost unearthly strange atmosphere, despite the fact that it is very shallow. This coral normally lives between 50 and 500 meters deep, yet it may be seen here at a depth of roughly 20 meters. In addition, the top of the reef serves as a playground for the Caribbean's younger species, resulting in a diverse range of species and dive types in a single dive.

Moray eels, lobsters, and turtles are also known to be frequently found in Black Coral, while a tunnel further up along the reef is arguably the best place on the island to find Eagle Rays. The shallow nature of the top of the wall provides excellent visibility for the vibrant coral outcroppings that meet the white sand, although the plunging depth of the wall also promises more adventure for those who wish to go deeper. Plenty of dive sites around the wall to enjoy, even on just one extended dive.

    Texas

Texas is one of the best dive sites in Honduras. The two currents that join the island on the western tip have created this spot. Because of the two currents, the diversity of marine life is sporadic, gorgeous, and different each time you dive here, and the ocean is inundated with schools of fish of all shapes and sizes. Around Texas is small leather jackets, starfish, gobbleguts and the occasional seahorse. The underwater terrain varies from jetty pylons to rocky reefs to seagrass beds. You'll have all kinds of company, including sea urchins, anemones, nudibranchs and blue-ringed octopuses.

The ocean is full of weird and wonderful creatures, and you just never know what you might find when you dip your head and swim even deeper under the surface. While much of the underwater world is beautiful, there is nothing more beautiful than a coral reef. In Texas, the coral reef is chock full of yellows, reds, oranges, pinks, blues, and more, and this reef even offers a wide selection of hard and soft coral for you to check out. It’s a true feast for the eyes, which is why so many people make this their diving spot each year.

  5. El Aguila Wreck ranks 5th on the list of the best dive sites in Honduras. A wreck intentionally spawned all for the intention of diving. Diving in El Aguila Wreck you’ll see a huge variety of fish; eels, parrot fish and grouper to name a few. This all comes with the backdrop of a beautiful wrecked boat broken into three that is now peppered with enormous varieties of corals.

The El Aguila is one of the best diving sites on Roatan and always a great experience. El Aguila, Spanish for ‘The Eagle’, is 230 ft long and rests at a max depth of 110'. It’s final voyage, according to Samir Galindo was a trip from Puerto Cortes to Haiti, carrying a large cargo of concrete. It wrecked near Utila possibly from sabotage and was there for several years, partially submerged. It was eventually salvaged and towed its current resting place on the North side of the island just a few minutes from West End. Dive shops had been looking for a ship to convert into a wreck dive, and El Aguila proved a perfect choice. Mitch really provided a service to the wreck divers of Roatan as the new layout makes for a wonderful and interesting dive experience.

They slowly change and develop with each meter down you go seeing the differences in the enormous corals, orange ear sponges and delicate seafans decorating the walls surface.

Half Moon Bay, home to the Black Rock Yacht Club and the Half Moon Bay Lifesaving Club, is the crescent-shaped small sandy shallow area to the left of the car park. It is an excellent night dive especially in spring when the phosphorescence is at its brightest. At night you can find octopus, flathead and bull rays. More than eighty diving sites are located around the island among its extensive reefs teeming with marine life, including the elusive whale shark.

    Utila

Utila ranks 7th on the list of the best dive sites in Honduras. This site is the smallest and flattest of the three major Bay Islands, and is the closest to the mainland. The island is 9.5 miles long and 3 miles wide. Land transportation is limited to a few pickup trucks, a couple of unreliable taxis and a ton of old mountain bikes. The Utila is not only renown as one of the best diving locations in the Caribbean, it is also known as the cheapest.

The North side of Utila is interesting diving but not any better than the south side. The visibility ranged from 60 to 100ft. Depths were 40 –90ft. Most dives are wall dives except for Black Hills which is an incredible seamount. Corals and sea life are prolific in Utila. All the dives were excellent. From mid-February through March one can almost be guaranteed a whale shark experience.

    Roatan

Roatan is home to some of the best diving in the Caribbean. Located about 30 miles off the East coast of Honduras you will find the island of Roatan. As part of the Mesoamerican barrier reef system, the second largest reef in the world, Roatan is an absolute mecca for scuba diving. Countless dive sites surround the island, providing us some real difficulty in narrowing down the best dive sites of Roatan.

This dive site starts with a dramatic descend through a long chute that takes you down to the actual ‘hole’ in the wall that opens up to the deep blue. Once through the ‘Hole in the Wall’ you head along the wall where you can see all sorts of marine life. Make sure to bring your flash light to get a better look into all the dark corners and crevasses, you can spot an octopus, many juvenile fish, and some rarer blennies! In addition this dive site is home to several networks of caves and swim throughs, all at a much shallower profile for all levels of divers!

  10. Odyssey Wreck ranks 10th on the list of the best dive sites in Honduras. This cargo ship was deliberately sunk in 2002. It is 300 feet long, one of the largest in the Caribbean. The bow sits at an angle of nearly 90o whilst the superstructure of the stern is at a 30 degree - which makes swimming through quite interesting. Few fish but the primary coral colonizers have found it and it is becoming more and more decorated. 34 m at its deepest point.

The Odyssey was donated by the Hydes of Hybur Limited after a devastating fire damaged the freighter during a rebuilding. The ship was cleaned, prepared, and finally sank after government approval with help from several dive operators and volunteers around the island. 50 truckloads of debris later, the ship was made safe for divers by welding incredibly heavy hatch covers to the ship’s frame, strengthening it to deter future collapse.

The centersection of the Odyssey has collapsed, but the bow remains tall and upright–providing scenic views of the surrounding reef wall, a nearby sand patch, and the rest of the ship. Holes for divers have been cut into the sides of the ship, but to explore inside an underwater flashlight is required. Schools of large grouper, barracuda, tuna, and sharks have often been seen surrounding the wreck by divers. It is impossible to explore the entire wreck in its multi-level enormity in a single dive.
