  1. Experienced podcast listeners may be rolling their eyes at this seemingly (painfully) apparent decision. Like Freakonomics Radio and NPR's Ted Radio Hour, Radiolab is the classic educational podcast. However, I felt it was necessary to raise the flag for anyone new to the podcasting industry (also, it would be downright disrespectful not to mention it because the show is just that good). Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich present the widely syndicated radio show and podcast Radiolab. The show delves into various scientific and philosophical themes in a delightfully approachable manner.

The program is expertly produced, and its rhythm and style, mainly owing to the solid narrative emphasis and imaginative sound design, distinguish it. You never know what the next episode will be about; previous episodes have looked at how we see color and unpacked the notion of responsibility. The unusual themes and Abumrad and Krulwich's magic touch create an immersive, instructive, and unique experience.

Radiolab is on a quest for knowledge. They ask probing questions and rely on investigative journalism to get answers. In any particular episode, it may whisk you through science, legal history, and into the home of someone halfway around the world. The show is noted for its creative sound design, which incorporates information into music. Jad Abumrad, Lulu Miller, and Latif Nasser present the show.

Radiolab is available on Apple, Spotify, Stitcher, and other podcast platforms. Check the airtimes on your local station. It is also accessible on CBC, ABC, and BBC.

  2. 99% Invisible is a hugely popular show exploring "the unnoticed architecture and design shaping our world. "The show's host is Roman Mars, whose rich, mellow voice has the inexplicable power to soothe even the most irritable of listeners. Informative, engaging, and expertly produced, 99% Invisible has the kind of compelling narratives and high production value that can capture the attention of nearly anyone, design-minded or otherwise.

The show sparks curiosity and reflection through the innovative topics it explores: the McMansion phenomenon, unpleasant design, and the origin story of curb cuts are but a few of the niche yet nuanced subjects tackled. Regardless of the topic, there's always something interesting to be learned, and the show's quality – along with Mars' dulcet tones – will be sure to keep you listening.

With approximately 500 million downloads, 99pi is one of the most popular podcasts on Stitcher, Pandora, iTunes and is available on RadioPublic, via RSS, and through other apps. Sirius XM subscribers may also listen on the Sirius XM app. You can listen to 99pi, as they say, "wherever you get your podcasts," and there's a new episode every week. But if listening isn't your thing, each episode has a print companion piece, and 99pi also has a book titled The 99% Invisible City, which hit the New York Times Best-Seller list the week of its release.

  4. Consider calling a friend and saying, "Meet me at the bar and tell me what's up with the economy." Now assume that you're having a good time. That's what they're aiming for here at Planet Money.

Planet Money finds creative, entertaining ways to make sense of the significant, complicated forces that move our economy. Then followed it from ground to gas tank; launched a satellite; built an adorable algorithmic trading Twitter bot, adopted an abandoned superhero, and made a merchandising empire.

Since Planet Money launched in 2008 during the financial crisis. It has won many awards, including a Peabody and an Edward R. Murrow Award, for our investigation into Wells Fargo's retaliation against whistle-blowers. You can also hear Planet Money stories on Morning Edition. 6. Hardcore History is Dan Carlin's forum for exploring topics throughout world history. The focus of each episode varies widely from show to show, but they are generally centered on specific historical events and are discussed in a "theater of the mind" style. New episodes are released approximately every four to seven months.

Hardcore History, which has millions of downloads per episode, received over 350,000 downloads in 24 hours on May 6, 2015. It was nominated in 2012 for a Stitcher Award in the Best Educational & Learning Podcast category. In addition, Carlin has received the Best Classic Podcast in iTunes' Best of 2014 awards, Best Educational Podcast of 2015 from the Podcast Awards, Best History Podcast of 2018 from the IHeartRadio Podcast Awards. It is a top 25 best podcasts list on the anniversary of 10 years of podcasts. Slate Magazine ranked Dan Carlin's 2009 episode Ghosts of the Ostfront, regarding the Eastern Front of World War Two, the fifth-best podcast of all time.

In "Hardcore History," journalist and broadcaster Dan Carlin takes his "Martian" unorthodox way of thinking and applies it to the past. Was Alexander the Great as bad a person as Adolf Hitler? What would Apaches do with modern weapons? Will our modern civilization ever fall like civilizations from past eras? It is not academic history, but the podcast's unique blend of high drama, masterful narration, and Twilight Zone-style twists has entertained millions.

  8. Invisibilia is a radio program and podcast from National Public Radio, which debuted in early 2015 and explores the intangible forces that shape human behavior—things like ideas, beliefs, assumptions, and emotions. The program's title comes from Latin, meaning all the invisible things. The Guardian ranked Invisibilia among The ten best new podcasts of 2015." As of their seventh season, the program is hosted by Kia Miakka Natisse and Yowei Shaw; previous seasons were also hosted by Lulu Miller, Alix Spiegel, and Hanna Rosin.

Alix Spiegel and Lulu Miller began collaborating on radio stories. They conceived a new long-form program that would become Invisibilia—the show's first six-episode season aired from January to February 2015, with excerpts occasionally running on All Things Considered, Morning Edition, Radiolab, and This American Life. Invisibilia debuted at #1 on the iTunes podcast chart and maintained a consistent top-ten ranking in the months following its launch. Hanna Rosin from The Atlantic joined as co-host for the second season, which premiered in June 2016 and ran for seven episodes. The third season debuted in June 2017, with Spiegel and Rosin as hosts. The Atlantic included "How to Become Batman" on their "The 50 Best Podcast Episodes of 2015" list.

Unseeable forces control human behavior and shape their ideas, beliefs, and assumptions. Invisibilia fuses narrative storytelling with science that will make you see your own life differently. In June 2020, NPR announced that Spiegel and Rosin would relinquish their roles by early 2021, and Kia Miakka Natisse and Yowei Shaw are the new co-hosts of Invisibilia, which aired its seventh season in April 2021. The show aired its eighth season in September 2021.

  9. Revisionist History is a podcast by Malcolm Gladwell produced by Gladwell's company Pushkin Industries. It began in 2016, has aired five 10-episode seasons, and is airing its sixth. Gladwell, who was already a successful author and essayist, was convinced to create a podcast by his friend Jacob Weisberg, then editor-in-chief of Slate Group, including the podcast network Panoply Media. Seasons 1 to 3 of Revisionist History were produced by Panoply Media. In September 2018, after Panoply dropped the medium, Gladwell announced he was co-founding a podcast company Pushkin Industries, with Weisberg. Pushkin produced the series from thereon, season 6 launched on June 24, 2021.

Each episode begins with an inquiry about a person, event, or idea and proceeds to question the received wisdom about the subject. In his own words, Gladwell describes it as a podcast about "things overlooked and misunderstood." He might be turning the story of the "Boston Tea Party" and the next, deep-diving into the infamous hug between Richard Nixon and Sammy Davis Jr. In each episode of Revisionist History, Gladwell skillfully weaves seemingly disparate threads together to produce a unique thesis. He has the uncanny ability to take a specific historical moment and use it as an opportunity to teach listeners so much more about the human experience. Prepare for the niche and the obscure, but prepare to be captivated.

  10. Stuff You Should Know is a podcast and video series published by iHeartRadio and hosted by Josh Clark and Charles W. "Chuck" Bryant. Since debuting in 2008, the podcast has been consistently ranked in the Top 10 on iTunes and is one of the most popular podcasts globally, being downloaded millions of times each month. On October 3, 2018, the podcast started releasing additional short episodes titled Short Stuff, where they cover topics that do not warrant the length of an entire episode. Stuff You Should Know, which releases episodes several times a week, educates listeners on various topics, often using popular culture as a reference giving the podcast comedic value. The podcast has spun off several other media types, including TV shows and books.

    Stuff You Should Know
has been running for over a decade, and it continues to dominate the charts. One of the most popular educational podcasts in the world, SYSK covers, well, everything. It doesn't matter what your areas of interest are: science, pop culture, history; they've probably got an episode on it. Chuck Bryant and Josh Clark co-host the show. One of the reasons the hosts believe the show has been so successful is that they are not experts in the myriad subjects they explore but just guys who enjoy research and are very curious. Their formula is part self-deprecating humor, part infectious wonder, and part self-discipline to go their separate ways and do all their research and reflection before they get to the studio. They often try to surprise one another with their research and do not have a script or a time limit before they sit down to record. Likewise, they do not rehearse beforehand.

The episodes of Stuff You Should Know are undoubtedly informative. Still, some stumbles along the way are ham-fisted remarks in moments that perhaps required delicacy, factually inaccurate statements expressed with utter conviction. Blunders aside, the sheer breadth of topics they address makes the show undeniably attractive, and their accessible approach to explaining issues makes for easy listening. Bryant and Clark have a comfortable, endearing rapport, undoubtedly established after creating over one thousand episodes together. It is like listening in on the conversation of your close friends – not consistently accurate, but entertaining just the same.

  13. It is the perfect show for any restless souls out there eagerly awaiting their next adventure. Wonderfully random and playfully delivered, this show is about the outlandish stories Overheard from National Geographic’s head office staff. No one theme ties the episodes together; the randomness stretches across various topics, like the truth behind Thailand’s elephant tourism industry or an underwater archaeologist’s journey scuba diving beneath a pyramid.

After each episode of Overheard, you will discover new, unusual insights into topics you might never have considered. Episodes generally hover under half an hour, making them the perfect companion for those early morning commutes or Sunday afternoon chores. These stories will teach you a little more about this wild and complex world we live in and will supply you with an abundance of peculiar facts to whip out at your next dinner party.

In 2022 they will journey into the Amazon to solve the mystery of a boiling river, to the South Pacific to search for the legendary aviator Amelia Earhart, and to K2, the world’s second-highest mountain. They will also venture into some of the world’s most isolated forests with an engineer who turns old cell phones into poacher-tracking devices. And we’ll join a team of climbers and scientists searching for rare frog species that have evolved on cliffs rising out of Guyana’s cloud forests. The weekly show begins January 18, hosted by Peter Gwin, Amy Briggs, and the editors and producers of Overheard.

As a listener, you will be transported across the globe, often multiple times in a single episode. Still, you will always remain in the capable hands of one of Monocle’s internationally-based correspondents or local experts. The stories alternate between more extended, detail-heavy episodes and brief, poetic city portraits.
