In Los Angeles, there are several swimming pools, including free public pools and exclusive clubs. Where can you go that is so awesome that kids want to spend ... read more...

  1. The Plunge is actually Culver City's second swimming pool. The American Legion destroyed the first one by erecting a club house on top of it in 1929. In a poster created by Jeff Dorer for the Creative Action Network's See America series, the pool is shown. Because of its heated competition pool, diving board, and Olympic-size pool, locals adore this location (open to kids who can pass the swim test and are at least 48 inches tall). Anywhere in the pool area, children under 48 inches must be supervised by an adult who is 18 years of age or older, and the adult-to-child ratio must be one to one. Discounted passes are offered, but even the day rate (adults $4, children $3) is rather reasonable. Reservations are necessary for a 70-minute swim session.

Let the helpful and knowledgeable American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors help you and your swimmers achieve your next swimming objectives, whether you are looking for a place for you or your swimmer(s) to learn how to swim or just looking for a place for them to improve their stroke, endurance, and speed. See what the Culver City Municipal Plunge has in store for you this summer by diving in below! Please use the swim level descriptions as a guide when choosing your classes.

  2. Stoner Park Pool is one of the best swimming pools for kids in L.A. This special public pool run by the city is a hidden gem that provides a gentle entry throughout the entire length of the pool, with spray features, fountains, and waterfalls to keep tiny kids occupied and drenched. For larger children (those who are 7 and older or 48 inches or taller), there is a water slide; nevertheless, be aware that its hours are more constrained than those of the pool. Also, take note that adults must be dressed in a swimsuit and accompany children aged seven and under in the water. Season tickets for children are offered. The water is typically pretty chilly, so save this one for a hot day.

Your kids will appreciate this pool because it is more of an aquatic playground than a swimming hole in the Sawtelle region. Kids will probably stick to the array of entertaining fountains on the zero-entry incline (read: no underwater steps!) because the wading pool is just around four feet deep.

  3. An area with salt water is called the Seaside Lagoon, and it is one of the best swimming pools for kids in L.A. Water for the beach lagoon travels to the nearby steam generating facility where it is used to cool the turbines from the other side of the breakwater, where it is roughly 50 feet deep. The water is then transported in enormous pipes beneath the street to the Seaside Lagoon, where it is chlorinated upon entry and dechlorinated upon exiting the lagoon and returning to the harbor. The Seaside Lagoon has a flow rate of about 200,000 gallons per hour and holds about 1.5 million gallons of water.

This one's not your normal swimming pool. A saltwater lagoon called Seaside Lagoon can be found just yards from the Pacific Ocean. Visitors can swim while being watched over by lifeguards; additional amenities include water slides, a playground, beach volleyball courts, and picnic spaces. If you want to call it that, the water park is only accessible during the summer, which this year runs from May 27 to September 4.

  4. The Beach House, which is accessible to everyone without requiring membership, is located on coastal land that was once created as an estate for actress Marion Davies in the 1920s, which is one of the best swimming pools for kids in L.A. One of the rare relics of the ancient estate is the swimming pool itself. Although the shallowest area of the pool is four feet deep, making it unsuitable for beginners (children under the age of eight must be supervised in the water by an adult), the facilities provide more than just swimming.

A splash pad, playground, indoor entertainment center with games and an ocean view, beach volleyball, and an outdoor cafe are also on the grounds in addition to the historic pool. The only thing that isn't free to use is the pool. In the summer, the pool is open every day, and in the off-season, pop-up pool days are hosted. As the pool can sell out on hot summer days, check the website for advance passes and reservations. If you do arrive and find it full, put your name on the list and enjoy the beach until your number is called!

  5. At the intersection of Van Nuys and Magnolia in Sherman Oaks, this aquatics complex contains an Olympic-sized pool (50 meters X 25 yards) that is heated year-round. That is one of the best swimming pools for kids in L.A. The pool is situated in the heart of a large, grassy park that covers several city blocks. Also held all year round are lessons and team-building exercises. The deep end, which is 13 feet deep, is open to diving. The neighboring wading pool is only one foot deep for the little ones and features a cute mushroom that shoots water out of its top for a cooling shower. (The wading pool is only open from June 15 to September 7 during the summer months.)

This pool facility offers something for everyone. The VNSO Aquatics Center offers all of these services in addition to recreational swimming, swim classes for kids, and lifeguard training for teenagers. For the little ones in your family, there is even a tiny wading pool that is just one foot deep and has a fountain in the style of a mushroom (though this little pool is only open during the summer months). Having advise looking over the pool's schedule because there is so much going on here.

  6. At 16th and Pico, there is a facility that caters to the community called the Santa Monica Swim Center. The Swim Center provides a wide selection of programs all year long, such as swim instruction, fitness classes, lifeguard training, and unique community events. Several user groups for teams are also hosted there. The City of Santa Monica owns and runs the swim center. The upper sun deck and spacious, light-filled community meeting room of the swim center offer a breathtaking view of both the fitness and splash pools. Only during the weekends' recreational swim hours are party rentals allowed. On Saturdays and Sundays, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

This Santa Monica public pool is about a mile from the beach, but in the soul-crushing ocean-bound traffic, that distance can seem like an eternity. Thankfully, this spotless, upbeat, brilliantly tiled, and moderately chlorinated pair of open-air pools offers a practical option. Recreational swimming is mostly restricted to the smaller splash pool throughout most of the year, although on weekends and in the summer it also includes the fitness pool. Wannabe divers will have to wait till the fitness pool is open because the recreational pool is only shallow.

  7. Searching for swimming lessons? Every level of student can take classes at Waterworks Aquatics in Pasadena in year-round heated pools. Waterworks Aquatics, frequently named by many local newspapers as the finest location to learn to swim, also provides birthday parties and family swim evenings with inflatable toys, games, and other activities.

The nationally recognized swim schools are built on the pillars of safety, quick learning, and enjoyable instruction. They encourage kids to have fun in the water while honing their swimming abilities by creating a positive environment and taking a child-centered approach. They are able to teach stroke technique quickly by combining a specific muscle memory technique with the rollover breathing method. Young children get the ability to swim across the pool safely by learning to roll onto their backs to breathe. The 1:1 or 2:1 student-to-teacher ratio guarantees that each student receives a tailored session that is both structured and adaptable to match their unique needs, enabling them to make steady progress and thrive in a secure, comfortable setting.
