Because of its fluffy, handcrafted donuts in flavors including guava and cheese, maple bacon, and white chocolate tres leches, as well as seasonal and limited-edition donuts, The Salty's swiftly changed from a pop-up food truck to a permanent fixture in Wynwood. Meet Freehold, a Brooklyn-born hospitality concept that blends the stylish lobby ambiance and trendy eateries you'd expect to find in a hip hotel but doesn't have any rooms. To think that during all those years, those who hung out in the communal rooms of the Ace and Standard hotels without being guests could have been hanging out at the Freehold instead.
The concept here is not to provide overnight lodging, but rather to provide day-to-night accommodations where people may have business meetings, join friends for a meal, or congregate for a drink and DJ-spun tunes—and then go home to their own beds. The spacious facilities at Freehold are evocative of a coworking space, but unlike those, you won't have to pay a membership fee to send emails from one of their nice sofa arrangements or built-in nooks. Outside, there's even more space in the 4,000-square-foot courtyard, which has a pool deck (no pool), covered seating, and a private cabana—because of Miami.
Do you need to refuel? Freehold offers several choices. There's a front desk, although it's more of a bar than a check-in desk and a café where you can buy Counter Culture coffee and other pastries. The Pizza Shop serves NY-style slices and crispy, thin pies for something more substantial. The menu is overseen by Anthony Falco of Roberta's, so you know it's fantastic. Programming is in the works, and it will feature live music performances, happy hour, and comedy acts, among other things.

Manny Portuondo spent years investigating his ancestors' Cuban brewery, which was founded in 1888. Cervecera La Tropical was formerly Cuba's best-selling beer, and Portuondo hoped to replicate it in Miami eventually. After 23 years of searching for the original recipes, Portuondo, a former Burger King executive, discovered that the former head brewer of La Tropical lived barely 10 blocks away in Miami. In Wynwood, Portuondo utilized the brewer's recipes to create his own version of Cervecera La Tropical.
The establishment is a temple to both the Cuban brewing legacy and modern architecture, with an outside setting that rivals many botanical gardens. The rotating paintings on the walls outside the gardens bear witness to Cuban patriots' suffering. But it's paradise in the courtyard, with shade trees covering tables spaced out along the patio and a stage for live music. A massive glass wall separates the contemporary brewery room with its long communal tables from the brewery beyond. The brewery features taps that skip kegs and come directly from the tanks, which is unusual for any brewery anywhere.
There are family portraits and historic photos of the old Havana brewery on the walls. The location is a tribute to all Portuondo's family went through to get here, including the years his father spent in Castro's jail. La Tropical is an ex-pat in Miami and a true Miami tale. Portuondo created a beautiful setting to salute it all.
