Agostinho Neto University
The Agostinho Neto University (UAN) is Angola's largest state university, with campuses in Luanda and the adjacent city of Talatona. The institution ministered 68 license courses in the academic year 2005–06: 18 Bachelor's degrees and 15 Master's degrees, involving areas of scientific knowledge in faculties, institutes, and higher learning schools. It is one of Angola's seven public (state-owned) universities. Agostinho Neto University was the country's only public university until 2009, with campuses in all of the country's main cities. It was divided up in 2009, with its campuses outside of Luanda establishing six independent universities. UAN is presently one of seven regional universities servicing Luanda and Bengo provinces, among others. It is still the largest university in Angola.
After Angola's independence from Portugal in 1975, the school's first aim was to train secondary school teachers in order to help the government achieve its goal of expanding post-primary education. The natural sciences, law, agricultural sciences, social sciences, humanities, economics, engineering, medicine, architecture, and nursing faculties were all maintained at the same time as others were added, bringing the UAN to include faculties of natural sciences, law, agricultural sciences, social sciences, humanities, economics, engineering, medicine, architecture, and nursing.
