Katyavala Bwila University
Katyavala Bwila University (UKB) is an Angolan public multi-campus university based in the city of Benguela. The university emerged from the dismemberment of the Benguela campus of Universidade Agostinho Neto in the midst of the reforms in Angolan higher education that took place in 2008 and 2009. Its area of operation is restricted to the province of Benguela.
The university honors King Katyavala Bwila I. This king is credited with founding the Bailundo Kingdom on the outskirts of the Halavala Mountains, in the Angolan Central Plateau region.
The historical tradition of the UKB is intertwined with the creation of the "Instituto Superior de Ciências da Educação de Benguela". This was announced by President José Eduardo dos Santos in August 1992, after a request from a high school commission in Benguela, when he was visiting that city. After that, the provincial education delegate João Evangelista Basílio sent the document entitled "Project of the University Center of Benguela" to the Ministry of Education. On September 1, 1992, the minister António Burity da Silva Neto authorized the creation of the Centro Universitário de Benguela.
