Catholic University of Angola
The Catholic University of Angola (UCAN) is a Catholic university located in Luanda, Angola's capital. The government of Angola granted the Angolan Catholic Church permission to build its own university on August 7, 1992. It began teaching on February 22, 1999, after receiving authorisation from the Episcopal Conference. It is a private university and one of only 12 recognized private universities in the United States. The "magno chanceler" is Msgr. Manuel Imbamba, and the rector is Father Vicente Cauchi.
It had roughly 6,000 students enrolled in 2012. Although English as a second language (ESL) is provided, sessions are held in Portuguese. Social sciences, economics, law, and engineering are the four departments that have been established.
Many countries, most notably the United States, but also Portugal, South Africa, Norway, Spain, and Italy, have contributed to the university's development through private business aid and non-governmental organizations. UCAN obtains all of its government revenues as a result of Decree 20/82, which mandated that petroleum companies operating in Angola invest $0.15 every barrel of oil produced in educational and training programs. These are often referred to as "Training Levy Funds."
