All About My Mother
All About My Mother (1999) involves a tragedy presented in a parody tone that ranges from hilarious to agonizing. The film tells the story of a woman named Manuela who lost her son on his 17th birthday. For a single mother, losing her own son is a difficult thing to accept but in this film, the audience somehow learns to overcome this pain. After her son died in an accident, she went to find the father of her child who had changed sex to report the news. It was not an easy journey for a mother who had just lost a child. And Manuela happened to meet a woman carrying HIV with a baby about to be born who is coincidentally also a child of the ex-husband she was looking for.
It is Pedro Almodovar's greatest work in terms of meditating on and deeply utilizing the issue of women's world. The film depicts viewers "the lost half of oneself" or more accurately, the deepest aspect of moms' feelings about being mothers. And it's possible that's why, when it comes to films inspired by motherhood, All About My Mother remains a modern cinematic high point. The prize went to filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar for his difficult and hard work. In early 2000, it won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
