Alnwick Castle, Northumberland

Alnwick Castle, the country's second-largest still-inhabited castle after Windsor, was constructed in the 11th century and is an easy day trip from Newcastle Upon Tyne, an English city 45 minutes to the south. Alnwick Castle is one of the largest inhabited castles in England.

It was home to the Duke of Northumberland's family, the Percys, for over 700 years; it has witnessed drama, intrigue, tragedy and romance. Although much has changed throughout the years, the structure is still very imposing today. Visitors can enjoy a range of entertaining activities here in addition to viewing the stunning grounds and gardens. Visitors can access a number of interesting exhibitions relating to the castle's long, rich history; the displays of artifacts collected by the family, including relics from ancient Rome and Egypt; as well as local events, in addition to guided tours of the plush interiors of the castle.
