Rochester Castle, Kent
Visiting Rochester in Kent is an easy and enjoyable day excursion from London. You'll find yourself in the pedestrian-friendly downtown neighborhood that was formerly popular with renowned English author Charles Dickens, who wrote some of his best-known works here, just a few steps from the railway station.
Once you've done exploring Rochester High Street's numerous historic structures and places of interest, head to Rochester Castle by ascending Boley Hill. Although now mostly in ruins, most of this massive fortress from the 12th century can be seen on either a guided or unguided tour. When visiting with children, try to schedule your trip to coincide with any local celebrations or events, such as the well-liked medieval fair. Rochester Cathedral, which was constructed in 1127, is located directly across from the castle. There are still some of the original features still remain, like the magnificent Great West Door.
