First released on Apple's iOS operating system in December 2009, the game has been downloaded approximately 12 million times from the App Store. This success led the company to expand the game on other smartphone devices, such as those on Android and PC operating systems.

Angry Birds received a lot of praise for its combination of novel gameplay, richness, comic style and low cost. Its popularity brought this game to PC and console platforms. With approximately 300 million downloads across all platforms and all versions, Angry Birds is considered "one of the most trending games today", "a hit game of 2010" and "the most successful mobile app the world has ever seen".
