Under the name, Astra International Inc., PT Astra International Tbk was initially founded as a general trading firm in Jakarta in the year 1957. As one of the largest Indonesian companies by market capitalization, it is the most prominent privately-owned automobile group in all of Southeast Asia. Its primary market is Indonesia, where it operates as a distributor of a comprehensive selection of vehicle and motorcycle products manufactured in conjunction with a number of different businesses, including Toyota, Daihatsu, Isuzu, UD Trucks, Peugeot, and BMW for automobiles, and Honda for motorcycles. Through its wholly-owned subsidiary, PT Astra Otoparts Tbk, Astra also maintains a significant position in the market for automobile components.
In addition, Astra has holdings in the areas of heavy equipment and mining, agribusiness, information technology, infrastructure, and logistics. In the area of financial services, Astra's companies offer a variety of financial products and services to back up its sales of automobiles and heavy equipment. Until the late 2010s, the group had a stake in PT Bank Permata Tbk, which allowed them to participate in the retail banking industry. Astra made an investment of $150 million US Dollars in the application-based, on-demand service Gojek in 2019.
